A Panini Grill is a grill press primarily for panini, an Italian sandwich made with ciabatta, cured meats, cheese, and vegetables.
The grill can be a stand alone electronic device or a cast-iron pan for a stove top. An electronic grill will have a lid that closes down on the sandwich, cooking both sides at the same time. Stove top grills require the sandwich to be turned and a heavy lid to rest on top during the grilling process so that the sandwich is pressed.
The panini grill requires no extra fat, unlike for example grilling a sandwich in a pan. A Panini can be grilled with low calorie ingredients, whilst still providing a tasty alternative to a cold sandwich. Additionally different types of breads can be used with lower carbohydrates if preferred. Cooking time for a Panini Grill is also fairly quick with the majority of sandwiches being able to be grilled in between 2 and 5 minutes.
Panini Grills can also be used to grill steak, Prosciutto, Salami, ham, hamburgers, fish such as Tuna, chicken, and vegetables such as eggplant and peppers. To grill using a Panini properly you need to ensure that the temperature is a minimum of 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Panini Grill should not be confused with the George Foreman Grill, these are similar but different products. A George Foreman Grill can also substitute for a Panini Grill. If you have a George Foreman Grill, you may find that the space needed and expense involved may make an investment in a Panini Grill non-effective.
