Panera Bread was founded in 1981 when it was purchased by a company by the name of Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. Louis Kane and Ron Shaich made the decision to purchased a chain of bakery-cafes in the Saint Louis area known as the St. Louis Bread Company in 1993. Over the next 4 years, this division of the company grew, and The Au Bon Pain Co sold all of it's divisions with the exception of St. Louis Bread Company in 1999. It was then renamed to Panera Bread. However, the company still operates under both names within the United States and Canada.http://www.panerabread.com/about/company/history.php
