Pandemic Alert Level

  • The World Health Organization's (W.H.O.) pandemic alert level is part of a six-phased scale designed to show the process of a pandemic as it develops and to react accordingly. The scale also includes a post peak and post pandemic phase.

    On June 11, 2009, W.H.O. raised the pandemic alert level for H1N1 (swine flu) from phase 5 to 6. W.H.O. officials stress that the announcement is a reflection of the global spread of the disease, not an indication that the disease severity.   • H1N1 Swine Flu

    For the first time since 1968, WHO declared on April 29, 2009, that the spread of the H1N1 swine flue virus was 'imminent', raising the pandemic alert level to phase 5.   • Japan Cases of H1N1

    After Japan reported that they have 135 confirmed cases of H1N1 on May 18, 2009, officials at WHO were reportedly considering raising the pandemic alert level to the highest level.
