The World Health Organization's (W.H.O.) pandemic alert level is part of a six-phased scale designed to show the process of a pandemic as it develops and to react accordingly. The scale also includes a post peak and post pandemic phase.
On June 11, 2009, W.H.O. raised the pandemic alert level for H1N1 (swine flu) from phase 5 to 6. W.H.O. officials stress that the announcement is a reflection of the global spread of the disease, not an indication that the disease severity.
