Physician Panayiotis Zavos specializes in fertility and reproduction and is an outspoken and controversial supporter of human cloning.
On April 21, 2009, Zavos stated that he cloned 14 embryos, implanting 11 of them into four women, who are prepared to give birth to cloned babies. The process reportedly occurred and was videotaped in an undisclosed Middle Eastern country, which does not have anti-cloning laws. The Independent: Fertility Expert: 'I Can Clone a Human Being'
Cloning Work
After announcing that he and two other doctors were prepared to begin human cloning in 2001, Zavos began attempts at human cloning in 2003. The following year, he announced the creation of a cloned human embryo. The media condemned the claims, stating that Zavos had no evidence to back up his announcement. The Independent: Fertility Expert: 'I Can Clone a Human Being'In 2009, Zavos announced that he had cloned 14 embryos, 11 of which were implanted into four women, but none of which resulted in a pregnancy. Three of the cloned embryos were created from dead individuals, one being a 10-year-old who died in a car crash. Zavos claims hundreds of couples have asked for his help in human reproductive cloning after exhausting all other modern methods of reproduction. The Independent: Fertility Expert: 'I Can Clone a Human Being'
