Pain relievers can come in many different forms. A pain relievers purpose is to sooth the discomfort of pain. Each pain reliever has a different purpose and also carries different risks. There are two main types of over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen to name a few. In some cases, when OTC medications don't relieve your pain, a doctor may subscribe a prescription pain reliever. Narcotic pain relievers are the most powerful prescription medication, but they also can come with serious side effects.
When choosing a OTC pain reliever it is important to read the label for side effects and interactions with other drugs you might be taking. Be sure that you are not taking two kinds of drugs with the same ingredient. Be sure to only take the pain relievers as described in the directions for use.
