Paco Rabanne is a Spanish fashion designer who fled to Paris with his mother during the Spanish Civil War and opened his own fashion house in 1966.
-
Early Career
Rabanne's mother worked as the chief seamstress for Balenciaga while he was a boy. He studied architecture in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts but had a love for fashion and spent hours sketching clothes and accessories. In 1965 he made boleros and dresses made of different materials such as metal and paper, which were quickly bought up by trendy boutiques and this led to the official opening of his design house in 1966. -
The Look
The style of Paco Rabanne was known to be unusual and bold because of his use of materials other than cloth to create his designs. Today, the clothing line is headed by artistic director, Patrick Robinson, who came to Rabanne in 2005. Robinson's designs still play with different textures, but are dominated by pleated and flounced knee-length skirts, loose-fitting jackets and dark earthy colors. -
