Evolution of Picasso's Work
Picasso's work is often divided into periods. From 1901-1904, he had his Blue period, which depicted forlorn people in shades of blue. His move to Paris in 1904 coincided with his Rose period, during which his paintings took on a warmer, more optimistic mood. And, in 1907, he and painter George Braque pioneered the Cubist style of painting. By 1921, Picasso was incorporating elements of collage into his work. During the 1930s, his attention shifted to political and military subjects.Understanding the Artist
Picasso showed interest in art fom a very early age. His first word was a shortened version of the Spanish word for pencil, lápiz. Picasso's father was a professor of fine arts. In his early teens, Picasso's father found him painting over one of his own skeches. He was so impressed by his young son's skills that he felt somewhat humiliated ...and decided to no longer create his own art. Picasso's earliest and greatest passion was truly painting.

"Everyone wants to understand art. Why don't we try to understand the song of a bird? Why do we love the night, the flowers, everything around us, without trying to understand them? But in the case of a painting, people think they have to understand. If only they would realize above all that an artist works of necessity, that he himself is only an insignificant part of the world, and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things which please us in the world though we can't explain them; people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree."
