Otto von Bismarck

  • Otto von Bismarck was a conservative politician who served in the Prussian legislature as the Ambassador of Russia and France from 1862-90. As Prime Minister of Prussia and a political leader of the first order, he was willing to cause wars in order to gain power over France and Austria.

Bismarck was pragmatic and resourceful, resisting the socialist agendas. But in the 1880's he softened and oversaw the legislation that provided, accident and health, insurance and finally old age pensions for the German population.

While Bismarck was serving as Minister-President of Prussia from 1862–1890, he was in charge of the unification of Germany. He was also named Chancellor of the North German Confederation. And in 1871 when the second German Empire was formed he stepped up to first Chancellor, being given the nickname "Iron Chancellor". In his time serving in office as Chancellor, Bismarck carried a very important role in German government and directly influenced German politics.

Politically astute, his goal was evident throughout his life and positioned Germany to lead in the next century. Fast Facts:
