The Ottawa Senators play in the Northeast division of the NHL's Eastern Conference. Although the franchise dates back to 1883, the current Senators have been in the NHL since 1992. The modern Senators have reached the Stanley Cup Finals once, in 2007, when they were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks.
On February 2, 2009, the Senators fired coach Craig Hartsburg after only 48 games. Cory Clouston was named interim head coach.
Original Senators
The team was first founded in 1883, playing in a variety of different leagues throughout Canada. They won the Stanley Cup seven times as a challenge prize, before they entered the NHL. The Senators joined the NHL as one of the founding four teams in 1917. They went on to win the Stanley Cup, as league champions, in 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927. Team owners fell into financial troubles during The Great Depression, the team was moved in 1934, becoming the St. Louis Eagles. The following year the franchise was sold back to the NHL, where the team was dissolved and players distributed throughout the remaining eight NHL teams.

The Dany Heatley Trade
After missing the playoffs in the 2008-2009 superstar Dany Heatley demanded a trade from GM Bryan Murray. A deal had been finalized with Edmonton but Heatley rejected it by refusing to waive his no-trade clause. Eventually, on September 12, 2009, Heatley and a 5th round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft were traded to the San Jose Sharks for forwards Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo plus a 2nd round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
