On May 23, 2008 Osvaldo Mata Valdovinos, 21, was killed while surfing off the Pacific coast of Mexico, near Acapulco.
Less than a month prior, another surfer, Adrian Ruiz, died after being bitten by a shark in the same area. After Ruiz's death, authorities staged a massive shark hunt using baited hooks.
Environmentalists opposed the hunt and, in the wake of another death in the area, have intensified efforts to have shark warning signs posted on the beaches.
