Predictions and Likely Nominees

Nominations for the 2010 Academy Awards were announced on February 2, 2010. A number of popular and critically-acclaimed 2009 movies were already considered "favorites" to get nominations, largely based on nominees and winners for awards from film critics or the Golden Globes, whose nominees are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The following films were frequently cited by sites like Moviefone and the Los Angeles Times as likely contenders for Oscar nominations:

Up in the Air: Jason Reitman's comedy-drama has 6 Golden Globe nominations, more than any other film this year. In addition to a nod for Reitman, the film is nominated for the lead performance of George Clooney, two different supporting actress nominations for Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga, a nomination for Reitman's direction and a nomination for Best Picture.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/15/AR2009121501275.html?hpid=moreheadlines

Precious: This audience favorite from the Sundance Film Festival has been shortlisted by the Los Angeles Times as one of only 5 films that could take Best Picture in 2010. Mo'Nique has been mentioned frequently as a possible winner in the Best Supporting Actress category for her breakthrough performance as the lead character's mother.http://www.vibe.com/mt/2009/09/is-moniques-performance-oscar-worthy-in-precious/

Avatar: James Cameron's epic science-fiction fantasy is well on its way to becoming one of the year's highest-grossing films, and it has been popular among both critics and audiences. It is also one of the nominees in the Best Picture: Drama category at the Golden Globes.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/15/AR2009121501275.html?hpid=moreheadlines

Inglourious Basterds: Quentin Tarantino's violent, pulpy WWII film has been mentioned by several critics as a potential contender for Best Picture, despite its dark and sometimes gruesome subject matter.http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2009/12/avatar-oscars-james-cameron-7149306285-movies-entertainment-news.html The chilling performance from German actor Christoph Waltz as the fiendishly clever Nazi Col. Hans Landa is considered almost a lock for a Best Supporting Actor nomination.http://insidemovies.moviefone.com/2009/08/21/oscar-buzz-christoph-waltz-inglourious-basterds/

The Hurt Locker: Kathryn Bigelow's harrowing, intense drama about soldiers working in a bomb squad in Iraq received critical praise when it opened in the Summer of 2009, and has re-opened in some theaters after receiving a lot of end-of-the-year award buzz. In particular, the chilling lead performance of Jeremy Renner has been cited as a likely Best Actor candidate by critics including Roger Ebert and Dave Karger of Entertainment Weekly.http://oscar-watch.ew.com/2009/12/31/dave-karger-oscar-predictions/
