Jon Stewart Host
The event was hosted by Jon Stewart who previously hosted the 78th Annual Academy Awards ceremony in 2006. The show featured very few prepared comedy bits by host Stewart due to the length of the 2007/2008 Writers Guild Strike, which had ended only weeks before the award ceremony.
Results
The film which garnered the most nominations heading into the program was No Country for Old Men with eight nominations, and it came away with four award wins. These included Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar Winner 2008, Best Director Oscar Winner 2008 for The Coen Brothers, Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winner 2008 for Javier Bardem, and the biggest prize of the night, Best Picture Oscar Winner 2008.

Meanwhile, for just the second time in the 80 year history of the awards, all four major individual acting awards went to non-American actors. In addition to Bardem (Spain), other winners were: Daniel Day-Lewis of Ireland as Best Actor Oscar Winner 2008 for There Will Be Blood; Marion Cotillard of France as Best Actress Oscar Winner 2008 for La Vie En Rose; and Tilda Swinton of Scotland as Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner 2008 for Michael Clayton.
