The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars are given annually since their inception in 1929. They are given to recognize those who are outstanding in their field of both acting and cinematography.
The award ceremony for the very first Oscars was held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a non profit organization in Beverly Hills, California. http://www.filmsite.org/oscars.html The sealed envelope system went into place in 1941 after the Los Angeles Times broke the embargo on publishing names of winners until after the presentation in 1940.http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/about/history.html
Only three times in the history of the awards have they failed to go off on schedule. Those times were in 1938, when a flood in Los Angeles delayed the ceremony for a week, in 1968 for two days out of respect due to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and then again in 1981 when President Ronald Reagan had an assassination attempt on his life. http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/about/history.html
In the storied history of the Oscars, three films have tied for the most wins with eleven: Titanic in 1997 (out of 14 nominations), "Ben-Hur" in 1959 (out of 12 nominations), and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2003, which swept all eleven categories it was nominated for. http://www.filmsite.org/oscars2.html#1
For the most nominations, Titanic and All About Eve in 1950 are the record holders with fourteen. http://www.filmsite.org/oscars2.html#2 For actors and actresses, Meryl Streep has been nominated an astounding sixteen times, winning twice, to be the overall leader. Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn are next in line with 12 nominations apiece, with Nicholson garnering three wins and Hepburn four.http://www.filmsite.org/oscars3.html
