When is the Oscars On?

Officially named the 82nd Academy Awards, the Oscars will be held on March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California. You can watch the Oscars online or you can tune into ABC at 7pm for the pre-show and 8pm for the televised award show. Hosts this year include Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin who have a long standing comedic rivalry.

Who Decides Oscar Winners?

A group of people referred to as The Academy review, critique and evaluate a wide variety of movies. To be considered for an Academy Award, the movie must meet the following requirements:http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/oscar3.htm

  1. The film must be longer than 40 minutes.
  2. The film must have premiered in a movie theater in the previous calendar year.
  3. The film must have played in an L.A. theater for at least 7 days.

In addition, forms such as the Official Screen Credits form must be properly completed and submitted.

After this process, films are received by Academy staff and the films are reviewed by the selection committee. These people have a very specific, but convoluted ranking and scoring system. After all films are reviewed, discussed and evaluated, nominees and winners are selected.
