New York City police officer Omar J. Edwards was shot and killed in East Harlem on the evening of Thursday, May 28, 2009. After finishing his shift as a housing inspector at roughly 10:30 p.m. EST, Edwards walked towards his car to find a man rummaging through it. He approached the man, Miguel Santiago, and the two began to scuffle. Santiago fled on foot and Edwards chased behind him with his gun drawn.Newsday.com: Off-duty NYPD Cop Fatally Shot by Fellow OfficerPlainclothes officers in an unmarked squad car, including Andrew Dunton, responded to a 911 call from the area, possibly from Edwards himself. It was unknown of either officer identified themselves to each other as conflicting reports from witnesses and officers involved have come in. The incident is being investigated by the New York Police Department and the Manhattan District Attorney.
