Olympics History

Originating in ancient Greece and resurrected in the modern era, the Olympic Games are held every four years for the nations of the world to compete in various sporting events.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Athletes from 14 countries participated in the games. After winning the triple jump, American James Connolly was the first person to become an Olympic champion since the Ancient Olympics in 393 AD. Since 1896, the Olympics have been held every four years. The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924. The summer and winter games were held during the same year until 1994 when they began alternating every two years.Library of Congress: Dates and Locations of the Modern Olympics
