The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Athletes from 14 countries participated in the games. After winning the triple jump, American James Connolly was the first person to become an Olympic champion since the Ancient Olympics in 393 AD. The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924.
