History
Although the sport of weightlifting can be traced back to ancient Egyptians and Greeks, international weightlifting competitions began in 1891.Official Website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games: Weightlifting Discipline's Origin Weightlifting was one of only nine sports at the first Summer Olympic Games held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The 1900 Olympics did not contain a weightlifting event, but the sport reappeared at the 1904 Olympics before being removed from the program again in 1908. In 1920, weightlifting returned as a full sport and has been contested in each Summer Olympics Games since. Also in 1920, the format of the event was restructured to allow athletes to compete by weight class. -
