  • Security concerns

The Malaysian government was eager to avoid incidents like those that occurred earlier in the relay in Paris and San Francisco. The only major incident occured when a Japanese family, consisting of two adults and a small boy, unfurled a Tibetan flag along the relay route. They were heckled by Chinese spectators and hit with plastic batons before being arrested by Malaysian police. Officials reported that the family was detained for "documentation" before being released.
