The Olympic Torch Relay passed through Islamabad, Pakistan on April 16, 2008. The event took place in the heavily guarded national stadium before a crowd of officials and elite onlookers. Originally planned as a two mile route through the center of the city, plans for the run were changed over concerns for security. The relay was televised live to the public.
The Olympic Torch Relay was disrupted early on by Protests in Paris and San Francisco but has had a calmer trip during recent stops in Buenos Aires, Dar es Salaam, and Muscat.
President Pervez Musharraf had reassured Olympic organizers that any protests in Pakistan would be contained. Pakistan and China have a history of military and economic cooperation and Pakistan supported China's actions during the recent Protests in Tibet.
