Olympic Ski Jumping 2010

2010 Olympic Ski Jumping was held at Whistler Olympic Park in Vancouver, British Columbia from February 12 through February 22. The event is held every four years at the site of the Winter Olympics. In ski jumping the skiers travel down a long ramp and into the air at speeds up to 95 kilometers (57 miles) per hour. Competitors are judged by the distance of the jump and their technique in the air and in landing.

There are three different events in ski jumping. In the normal hill and large hill individual there are two rounds of jumps. Fifty competitors jump in the first round with the top 35 advancing to the final round. In the team event, there are four competitors per team, each of which jumps in the first round. In the second round, only the top eight teams participate.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-ski-jumping/additional-information/about-the-sport_146098ob.html Competitors to watch include Gregor Schlierenzauer, Thomas Morgenstern and Wolfgang Loitzl of Austria, Simon Ammann and Andreas Kuettel of Switzerland, Janne Ahonen and Matti Hautamaeki of Finland, Adam Malysz of Poland, Martin Schmitt of Germany and Anders Johnson of the United States.http://www.nbcolympics.com/ski-jumping/athletes/index.html

Background

The origins of ski jumping date back to 1809 when Olaf Rye, a lieutenant from Norway, jumped 9 1/2 meters. Ski jumping competitions began in 1862 and first appeared in the Olympics in 1924. The large hill competition was first held at Innsbruck in 1964. The technique of holding the skis in a V-shaped position started in 1985 and is still used today. The method was shown to provide more distance than the parallel position of the skis. The three events are the men's short hill, long hill and team jumps.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-ski-jumping/additional-information/about-the-sport_146098ob.html Legendary ski jumpers include Kazuyoshi Funaki of Japan, Jens Weissflog of Germany and Matti Nykaenen of Finland.http://www.nbcolympics.com/ski-jumping/insidethissport/history/newsid=280387.html#ski+jumping+history
