Background

Short track speed skating started in Canada and the United States in 1905, and became part of the International Skating Union in 1967. In 1988 it was a demonstration event in the Winter Olympics at Calgary, and became a medal event in 1992. The events take place within the confines of a hockey rink with competitors racing against each other as opposed to the clock. The outcome of events are determined by heats of four to six, with the top-tow finishers moving on to the next round.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-short-track-speed-skating/additional-information/about-the-sport_146076Zz.html Notable short track speed skaters include Hyun-Soo Ahn and Lee-Kyung Chun of South Korea and Yang Yang of China.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-short-track-speed-skating/athletes/legendary-athletes/
