Olympic Protest Golden Gate Bridge

  • On April 7, 2008, three protesters opposing China's occupation of Tibet, have climbed the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California and affixed a sign reading "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 08."

They are members of the activist group Students for a Free Tibet. The protesters were all roped together, and one of them carried a Tibetan flag. They were arrested at about 1 pm PST, after rappelling down the bridge. It is expected that iron workers will rescale the bridge and remove the banner

On April 8, the Olympic torch, bound for Beijing and the Chinese-hosted 2008 Summer Games, will make its only U.S. appearance in San Francisco, and will cross the Golden Gate.

The same organization attached a sign to the Westminster Bridge in London a day before. Chaos also hit Paris on April 7 as protesters attempted to douse the Olympic Torch as it passed through the city. (The torch was temporarily extinguished by officials at one point).

The Chinese games have been dubbed the "Genocide Olympics" because of Chinese trade agreements with the government of wartorn Darfur. Steven Spielberg, who had once planned to serve as artistic director for the Chinese Opening Ceremonies, stepped down from the position in February.
