Both men's and women's ice hockey tournaments were held at the 2010 Winter Olympics. All hockey events were at the General Motors Place, home of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League, and the UBC Winter Sports Centre, both in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The women's tournament, containing eight teams, began on February 13, with Team Canada winning the gold medal game 2-0 over the United States on February 25. The men's tournament, featuring 12 teams, started on February 16 and concluded with the gold medal game on February 28, in which Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-hockey-schedule-results/
Each team began the tournament by playing in the preliminary round with each team facing the other three teams in their grouping. The teams were then ranked, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoff round. As the men's tournament included more teams, the remaining teams competed in a secondary round to earn one of four additional spots in the playoff round. The top two teams in each bracket played in the gold medal game while the next two runner-ups competed for the bronze medal.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-hockey-schedule-results/

Background
While men have been competing in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics since 1920, the women's tournament was introduced in 1998. The U.S. women's team won their opening competition, but Canada has taken the gold medal in the games following. On the men's side, Sweden has brought home the gold in two of the four recent games with Canada and the Czech Republic also winning once recently as well. The 2010 games also mark the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, when the American's defied all odds to bring home the gold medal.
