Results for Pairs Skating
Gold Medal: China (Shen and Zhao) Silver Medal: China (Pang and Tong) Bronze: Germany (Savchenko and Szolkowy)
Shen and Zhao win the Gold after 4 olympics. They have been skating together for 18 years and were the sentimental favorite to win.
Pairs Short Program
Figure skating is officially underway. The Pairs short program began on 2-14-2010.
The favored team to win (China team Shen/Zhao) drew to skate first, which is often a dreaded spot since judges are known to hold off on awarding higher scores for later performances.
The night started off with a look at the romantic journey for Shen and Zhao. They started skating together almost a decade ago and the romance bloomed years later after Zhao suffered a major injury and Shen was there for him every step of the way. They have won numerous world championships and won the bronze medal at the Torino Olympics but their ultimate goal is the olympic gold medal. They came out of skating retirement for this shot at the gold.
It is so poignant that they skate together on Valentine's Day.
They set a record for the highest score for a short program at an International competition with 76.66
