  • Past Corruption & Fraud Scandals

Starting in the 1970s, Olmert filed suit against his political adversary, retired general Rehavam Ze'evi, on charges linking him to several prominent Israeli business men, organized crime and corrupt legislators. Ze'evi responded with a libel suit. During the trial, allegations arose that Olmert used public funds for his personal defense. All allegations against Olmert in this case were settled out of court.

On March 7, 2006 an inquiry was launched against Olmert to investigate a suspicious real estate deal that may have illegally been used to bolster campaign funds. The inqury led to a formal criminal investigation which began on September 24, 2007.

On January 16, 2007 a separate investigation was initiated to look into suspicious deals made during Olmert's tenure as Finance Minister. Investigators concluded that there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

In May, 2008 it was leaked that Olmert was under investigation in another trial, this time on charges of bribery. Financier Morris Talansky was named in connection with the alleged bribery scheme. The alleged bribes to Olmert are thought to be illegal campaign contributions.
