Baseball Career
A native of Mexico, the San Diego Padres originally signed Perez as an amateur free agent in 1999. After a few years as a prospect in the Padres farm system, Perez made his major league debut on June 16, 2002, pitching five innings in a Padres victory over the Seattle Mariners. The next season, the Padres traded Perez, Corey Stewart, and Jason Bay to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Brian Giles. The Pirates later traded Perez along with Roberto Hernandez to the Mets for Xavier Nady.
