Celebrating Oktoberfest in America
Just because you don't live in Munich, doesn't mean you can't have your own Oktobefest celebration. Get creative in the kitchen and try braising your sausage and sauerkraut in a rich, amber ale.Epicurious: Beer-Braised Sauerkraut and Sausage Another idea: make your own festive, homemade pretzels! Soft pretzels take a bit of preparation work, but they are fairly low in calories and fat.http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Buttery-Soft-Pretzels/Detail.aspx
One particularly easy recipe to try is German potato salad. Bring approximately three pounds of peeled and sliced potatoes to a boil and cook until they are tender. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, onion, salt, vinegar, sugar, parsley and pepper together. German potato salad can be served at room temperature or chilled in the refrigerator.
How to Make Bratwurst
This video offers step by step instructions on how to make delicious bratwurst that you can serve at your next Oktoberfest party. To make homemade bratwurst sausage, you can use a pork shoulder that's been trimmed, leaving just a bit of fat for flavor. Debone the pork and then use a grinder to grind the meat (cut into cubes for easier grinding). Add spices, including sugar, corander, sage, cayenne pepper, mustard, rosemary and nutmeg. The video also shows how to stuff the sausage into casings.
