In July of 2007, the NCAA ruled that the University of Oklahoma football team would be required to forfeit all of its victories from the 2005 season. This was because of two players, Rhett Bomar and J.D. Quinn, were dismissed from the team after allegation came to light that they had been paid for work not performed at a nearby car dealership. The NCAA determined that this was the central violation among the school's "failure to monitor" several football players that became involved in working during the academic year, in direct violation of NCAA rules.
Oklahoma has twice before been found in violation of NCAA rules. In 1973, the team was forced to forfeit nine games from the 1972 season due to recruiting violations stemming from altered student-athlete transcripts. In 1989, the team placed on 3 years probation for violating multiple NCAA rules. The school is currently planning to appeal the sanctions.
