Oklahoma City Bombing 1995

  • The Alfred. P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed on April 19, 1995. The bombing was determined to be a domestic terrorist attack by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

According to the investigation, the McVeigh and Nichols orchestrated a sophisticated home-made bomb in back of a Ryder rental truck. The truck was parked in the street, just in front of the federal building. Detonated by fuse lit by McVeigh, the bomb exploded at 9:02 a.m., destroying 1/3 of the building within seconds.

160 people died from inside the building, and another eight died from injuries outside of the building but still in the blast area. McVeigh's stated purpose was revenge on the government for the incidents at Ruby Ridge, Idaho and Waco, Texas.

McVeigh was executed on June 11, 2001. Nichols is serving a life sentence in the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. A third conspirator was revealed, Michael Fortier. Fortier entered into a plea bargain with prosecutors, testifying against McVeigh and Nichols. In exchange he received a shorter prison sentence and has since been released into the Federal Witness Relocation Program.
