Ohio

Ohio is the 17th state admitted to the Union and is located in the Midwest region of the United States. Despite the fact that it is one of the smallest states west of the Appalachians, it is the country's seventh-largest state in population as of 2007. Much of the northern part of Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie, and the entire southern part of the state touches the Ohio River.

Since 1816, the capitol of Ohio has been Columbus. Other major cities include Cleveland and Cincinnati. Ohio is nicknamed "the birthplace of aviation" due to the "Wright Brothers" experiments in Dayton. Ohio History

Ohio was viewed as the frontier even before it was properly explored by Europeans. French and British arrived first in the area as they were drawn to the trade and commerce. The people of Ohio played a vital role during the Civil War contributing greatly to the Northern victory. The Civil War mobilized more than 260 regiments of men. Ohio is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents - William H. Harrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William H. Taft, and Warren G. Harding. Ohio has through the course of it's agricultural history, become the depiction of of the urbanized and industrialized United States. The lifestyle of it's inhabitants are so representative of the rest of the country that often times attitudes, ideas, and commercial products are tested here first to determine demographic indicators.
