Oedipus Rex

Oedipus Rex is an Italian film by Pier Paolo Pasolini adapted from the Sophocles' Greek tragedy play Oedipus the King.

A young father, jealous of his infant son, has the child taken to the desert to be abandoned. Unknown to the father, his son is rescued by King Polybus and Queen Merope. The couple name his Edipo, and raise him as their own. Edipo grows up to learn of a prophecy that decrees that he will murder his father and marry his mother. Edipo leaves Polybus and Merope, believing that they are his true parents. He kills the King of Thebes in the road after a heated argument, fulfilling the first half of the prophecy. Edipo goes on to free the kingdom of Thebes from the curse of the Sphinx, winning the hand of Queen Jocasta in the process, and fulfilling the prophecy.
