Odin was the father of the gods in Norse mythology. He was also a god of war, poetry, death and wisdom. His father was Bor, his mother was Bestla. With his wife Frigg, he fathered Hermod the Nimble, the messenger of the gods, Baldr, the god of light; and Hod, the blind god of darkness and winter. He fathered the god of revenge and silence, Vidar, with the giantess Grid. With the earth goddess Jord, he fathered Thor, the god of Thunder. Odin lived in Valhalla, the hall of the slain, where warriors who died in battle were taken. Odin had another hall, Valaskjalf, where he sat on his throne Hlidskjalf and watched over all of the nine worlds of Norse mythology.http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/europe/norse/articles.html
Odin possessed a spear, called Gungnir, that never missed and a ring that generated eight new rings every nine nights. He also had a horse with eight legs called Sleipnir. His messengers were two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. Their names meant "thought" and "memory", respectively, and they visited battlefields, returning to Odin with information on which warriors deserved to be brought to Valhalla.http://users.dickinson.edu/~eddyb/mythology/Gods-1.html
Odin Mythology
Odin had only one eye. It was told that he traded the other eye for a drink from the Well of Wisdom. He also hanged himself from the tree of life, Yggdrasil, by piercing himself upon his own spear. He hung there for nine days and nine nights, fasting the entire time. From this experience he was able to reach the land of the dead, gained the ability to understand and use runes, and bring the dead back to life. With this power to raise the dead he preserved the head of Mimir, the wise god who had been beheaded by the Vanir. This allowed him to ask Mimir his opinion as he needed to.http://users.dickinson.edu/~eddyb/mythology/Gods-1.html
