Kenobi was the first Jedi in 1000 years to defeat a Sith. He was then personally honored by Yoda, a Jedi Master, who bestowed upon him the rank of Jedi Knight. Due to his new rank and recent demise of his Master, he takes Anakin Skywalker as his padawan learner. After his exile, Obi-Wan masquerades as a hermit under the name of "Ben Kenobi". It is under this disguise that he first encounters Luke Skywalker.
Obi-Wan Kenobi also held the positions of Jedi Master, Jedi Council Member, and Jedi High General. http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/obiwankenobi/
