  Barack Obama announced his campaign in February, 2007. On August 27, 2008, he officially became the Democratic Party's nominee for President at the 2008 Democratic Convention. On November 4, 2008, Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States by defeating Republican candidate John McCain.
