During Barack Obama's speech on the evening he was elected the 44th President of the United States, he promised to get his daughters, Sasha and Malia, a dog when they moved into the White House.
According to reports, a six-month-old Portuguese water dog will be delivered to the Obamas on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. The male puppy is being re-homed to the Obamas from a Texas kennel. The dog is from the same lineage as Portuguese water dogs owned by Ted Kennedy and the Kennedy family will present the dog to the first family. The Obama girls have reportedly named the puppy "Bo," after musician Bo Diddley. Narrowing Down the Choices
During an interview on ABC's This Week on January 11, 2009, Barack Obama reported that the family had narrowed down their choice to two breeds: a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water dog. In an interview with People magazine in February 2009, first lady Michelle Obama said she was hoping the family would adopt a rescue Portuguese Water Dog, but the family intends to vote on the final choice. Just a day after the election, a video of a dog saying "Obama" began circulating the internet. The video was uploaded to YouTube on November 5, 2008, by a user with the profile name Amaranth666.
