Looking to go 2-for-2
Before the 2009 tournament, President Obama welcomed Katz and the ESPN camera crew to the White House to take a behind-the-scenes look at the President filling out his brackets with the help of several aides, including White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
He wound up selecting North Carolina to win the championship, and they did just that. During the tournament, he went 19-13 in the first round games, including 7-1 in the West Regional, then he posted a solid 14-2 mark in the second round, only missing on Xavier in the East and Arizona in the Midwest getting to the Sweet 16. In the regional semifinals, he went 5-3, getting both selections correct in the Midwest and one each for the three regions. His overall record for 2009 was 41-22.http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/0317/obamasbracket09.jpg
The Kansas Jayhawks are the team he has selected to go to the Final Four in 2010 and win it all. The other three teams he has making the Final Four along with Kansas include: Kansas State, Kentucky, and Villanova. He is only picking nine lower seeded teams to win in the first round: the biggest upsets he's projecting are: Cornell as the #12 seed in the East to topple Temple, and Murray State as the #13 seed in the West to knock off Vanderbilt.http://a.espncdn.com/media/pdf/100317/obama_bracket.pdf
President Obama is a huge sports fan, and despite his incredibly arduous task of trying to run the country as the leader of the free world, he is very much in the know about teams and players in breaking down his picks. He also freely admits to be influenced by his 'Body Man' Reggie Love who played basketball at Duke University. Obama also plays pick-up basketball as much as he can to stay in shape.
