Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are lightly spiced cookies that contain oatmeal and raisins. Oatmeal Raisin cookies are a variant of the plain oatmeal cakes of Scotland. The Oatmeal cookie was an attempt at making cookies a health food that ended in a delicious result.

Background and History
No one really knows just when or who decided to add raisins to Oatmeal cakes, but it is known that Oatmeal cakes were the origin of Oatmeal cookies. Raisins and nuts have been being added to the cakes at least since the Middle Ages.
Oatcakes originated in Scotland and were popular all over the British Isles. The cakes popped into the scene right around the time the Scottish began harvesting oatmeal which was around 1000 BC. Originally the cakes were a staple food more like a pancake than a cookie. The Oatmeal Raisin cake did not officially morph into an actual cookie until about the 19th century when Oatmeal had become a more popular cooking ingredient world-wide.
The very first known record of the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe was found in the Boston Cooking-School Cook Book and was written by Fannie Merritt Farmer in 1896.
