Riots broke out in Oakland, California, on January 7, 2009, during a protest of the death of a young man who was fatally shot by a police officer on a train platform on January 1. The 22-year-old man, Oscar Grant, was apparently shot by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police officer Johannes Mehserle, who has since resigned his position. Oscar Grant was fatally shot by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle on January 1, 2009. Video from a cell phone captured the shooting. Police say they pulled Grant off a train because he was involved in a fight inside. Mehserle, 27, resigned from the police department on January 7.
