  • Oakland is a city in northern California. It is situated in Alameda County. The city is the eighth largest in the state and covers over 50 square-miles.Oakland Convention and Visitors Bureau: About Oakland
  • History

    The area was originally inhabited by the Ohlone Indians. It was later settled by Spanish explorers in the early 1820's. The first village post office opened in 1851 under the town name "Contra Costa." It wasn't until 1855 that town was known as Oakland. In the early 1890's the first electric streetcar coasted through the city, which where later replaced by buses in 1948. In 1936 the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge opened to traffic. It was considered "one of the engineering wonders of the world." In 1966 the Black Panther Party was born to advocate civil rights and self-defense among the African-American community. Later, in the early 80's, the Oakland Tribune became the first "major metropolitan newspaper" owned by an African-American, Robert C. Maynard.     The first Major League Baseball team entered Oakland in 1968, the Oakland A’s. In the early 1970's the NBA's Golden State Warriors relocate to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena.
