The Oakland Athletics play in the Western Division of the American League in Major League Baseball. In it's franchise history the Athletics have won one Wild Card, fourteen West Division Titles, 15 American League Pennants, and nine World Series Titles.
The team had planned to build a new stadium in Fremont, California, 20 miles south of their current location, however on February 24, 2009, the Athletics announced the the plans were off. 1970's Dynasty
In 1972, 1973, and 1974, the Oakland Athletics would win three straight World Series championships. The team was led by players such as Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers and Vida Blue. In 1972, the Athletics would defeat the Cincinnati Reds in a Seven game series.Gene Tenace would be named the Most Valuable player. The following year the Athletics would defeat the New York Mets in another Seven Game Series. Reggie Jackson would be selected as the World Series Most Valuable Player. In 1974, the Athletics would complete the three-peat by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five game series. Relief pitcher Rollie Fingers would win the World Series Most Valuable Player. -
1989 World Series
The 1989 World Series would be marked by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Since the games all took place in the Bay Area the series was postponed for several days. In the Series, the Oakland Athletics would sweep the San Francisco Giants in four straight games. The championship was the only title after reaching the world series in 1988, 1989, and 1990. The team was lead by the bash brothers,Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. -
