Nougat

Nougat is a thick candy with a consistency similar to caramel. Honey is a common ingredient, but sugar can be used instead. The two basic types are white nougat and brown nougat. White nougat is made from beaten egg whites and has a softer more airy texture than brown nougat. Brown nougat is made from caramelized sugar and is heavier and more crunchy. Nougat often contains nuts or dried fruits.

Nougat Origins

The history of nougat is a topic not all historians agree upon. Most historians believe that it originated in ancient Rome where a dessert of honey, eggs and almonds was reserved only for special occasions. French historians think that nougat originated from a walnut dessert from Greece.
