Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men's Basketball

  • Often overshadowed by their football playing counterparts, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men's Basketball team has some tradition and history worthy of 'Waking up the Echoes' themselves. The team is currently a member of the Big East Conference, and has made 28 NCAA Tournament appearances. Among the more celebrated players to play for the Irish have included Austin Carr, Adrian Dantley, Bill Laimbeer, Kelly Tripucka, Troy Murphy, David Rivers, Orlando Wollridge. Pat Garrity, and John Paxson. The current head coach is Mike Brey, a former long-time assistant at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski. The most celebrated coach in school history, however, maybe current ESPN analyst Digger Phelps. Phelps is responsible for guiding the team to its only Final Four appearance in 1978, and also coached the team during its most memorable victory, ending UCLA's 88-game winning streak in 1974.
