History
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a Roman Catholic order of nuns that was founded in France, traveled to San Francisco to set up a missionary school. They established the College of Notre Dame in the nearby city of San Jose in 1851. In 1868, the school received a charter, which allowed it to be the first institution in the state of California to grant undergraduate degrees to women. In 1923, the campus was moved to a larger facility in the city of Belmont, California.NDNU: History -
