Notebook computers are portable computers running on batteries that are about the size of a 3-ring binder notebook. This is a broadly defined term that encompasses portable computers of many brands, operating systems and CPU types.
Notebooks contain all the components required to run a state of the art operating system. Initially they included the CPU, memory and harddisk storage with an LCD screen, integrated keyboard, modem and most importantly a touchpad navigation device.
Later models included CD-ROM drives, DVD burners and I/O ports to accept network connections, USB devices and plug-in PCMCIA and PC-Express cards. Notebooks are often called Laptops and recently the smallest members are call Netbooks.
