"Not A Father's Day" is a holiday that was created by a character on the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. The holiday was introduced in the November 10, 2008 episode entitled, "Not a Fathers Day". In the episode, characters Lilly and Marshall mull over whether or not to have a baby and seek the advice of all of their friends. When they ask Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris, he tells them about the holiday he created--Not A Father's Day. Not A Father's Day is the celebration of all men who choose to not become fathers. His extended monologue highlighted the oath associated with the holiday and famous non-fathers. A website celebrating the holiday debuted the day the episode aired.http://foxshop.seenon.com/?v=fox_splash_not-a-fathers-day
Since the television broadcast of this new holiday idea, the concept has slowly gained popularity, thanks in large part to the popularity of the TV show and actor Neil Patrick Harris. Products and downloadables are available online to help celebrate the holiday, including t-shirts and postcards.
The Not A Fathers Day Oath Excerpt
"I, (state the fake name you give to women), vow to always choose wet t-shirts over wet diapers. I vow to choose D-cups over sippy cups and perfect 10s over play pens. I will never jeopardize my dignity, paycheck or awesomeness through the heinous crime of reproduction."Official Site: Not A Father's Day
"If I am to ever father and bring new life into this world, I promise to forever denounce my bro-hood. This I pledge; for I will always hold sacred this fraternity of non-paternity."Official Site: Not A Father's Day
