Northern Illinois University is a public school of higher learning, that offers degrees in undergraduate and graduate programs. The school's sports teams are part of the Mid-American Conference.

University History
The institution was originally founded in 1895 by John Peter Altgeld. The facility opened four years later as the North Illinois State Normal School. After several name changes, the school was given its current name in 1957.Shooting
On February 14, 2008, NIU student Steve Kazmierczak shot and killed five students, then himself, on the school's campus. The location of the shooting, Cole Hall, was originally scheduled to be demolished, but is currently set to be remodeled based on a decision by students and administrators.
