Northanger Abbey is a romantic and gothic narrative by Jane Austen.
The novel tackles the commercial points of marriage in the nineteenth century among English gentry.
Plot Synopsis
Northanger Abbey tells the story of Catherine Morland, her visit to Bath, and the ensuing relationships with the Thorpe and Tilney families.
Critical Reception
Being Austen's novel to be sold for publication, Northanger Abbey was sold to Crosbie & Co for £10. It was left on Crosbie & Co shelves, while four other Austen novels were published. Henry Austen bought it back for £10, and it became the first of Austen's novels to have her name in print as the author.
