North Korea Nuclear Reactor

  • U.S. officials say that North Korea might be attempting to restore their Yongbyon nuclear complex. The North Koreans have allegedly been moving around equipment on the complex which had previously been kept in storage.

On April 25, 2009, the North Korean foreign ministry said the country had begun extracting plutonium from spent fuel rods at Yongbyon, in order, the ministry said, to protect North Korea from hostile threats. Experts estimate it would take three months for North Korea to restore its reprocessing facility to full working order, but it may find it difficult to obtain needed equipment for their reactor.Washington Post: North Korea begins extracting plutonium (April 25, 2009)
