Polling before the 2008 presidential election showed John McCain's lead narrowing to challenger Barack Obama. After the polls closed, however, John McCain won North Dakota and the states three electoral votes.

North Dakota's electoral votes have not been won by a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon Johnson won them in 1964.
